It's because I have been intermittently internet lurking the creative director at Bloomberg Businessweek, Jennifer Daniel. I saw her a while ago at the Cleaners for the Be Honest portfolio review and it was what I always hope for in a design lecture—witty, engaging, inspiring and most of all, seriously funny. She showcased a lot of successes and failures while working as an Art Director and illustrator at the New York Times. While her execution is varied, her ideas tend to strike a balance of surprise and humor. In fact, her work reminds me of a book that I always feel that I should be rereading—Smile...

Boing Boing, WHAAAA? That's what I should have posted here back in May. The packaging for Fifty Licks ice cream was highlighted by both Boing Boing and How Magazine last year. It then spread to a few other design blogs, which was fun. This packaging was such an incredible challenge from both a technical and design standpoint—one I really enjoyed, and the owner Chad Draizin was a true collaborator in the process. Still one of my faves.

Sarah is the kind of friend you might find yourself talking to for hours on end until early in the morning about everything. And believe me, with Sarah that everything might include a fair bit of math. Once on vacation to Las Vegas she gave me a middle school math quiz and was horrified with the results. So when she told me that her school's math team needed a mascot for their t-shirts—I knew I had to do it. I mean c'mon MATH VIKINGS? I knew a viking hat would be involved… and perhaps a calculator, but I wasn't sure how. After a few rounds of sketches my bearded math mascot came together.

Mike Merrill, my favorite publicly-traded person, made these amazing Hot Knives patches from a logo that I created for them. So stinkin' cool. Looking forward to the day I become the in-house designer for Mikey's pet projects.

As a tribute to Dover, I bring you one of my favorite Dover typefaces, Oak Forest—with a bit of color photoshoppery.
I continue to be surprised and delighted by some of the graphic lettering found in any one of the couple dozen Dover type books I invested in a decade or so ago. My first trip to New York I made a special trip to the Dover bookstore in the publishing district, and then had to haul clip art and type specimen books with me all over New York. Thanks, Dover.

As a born and bred Washintonian, I don't know if it's possible not to get this new WA state tribute poster by Aaron Draplin. The only thing I wish is that it included these highlights from my formative Washington experiences.
1. My Dad's favorite metal/glam/rock band from Yakima, TKO.
2. Sumner. Smallish town inside the armpit of highway 410 and 167 where I went to high school.
3. KGRC. Green river community college's radio station. I had the 2:00 slot on Wednesdays in 1994 while I took two radio classes...
